By all reports, the majority of tech journalists and publications that have had a chance to get their mitts on one of the new MacBook Air laptops are smitten with the diminutive machine. However, not everyone is happy with the diminutive computing computing marvel. In Apple's support forums, a number of owners of 11.6-inch MacBook Airs have posted complaints surrounding the issue of video issues and kernel panics--issues that typically point to faulty logic boards. Another user reported that his late 2010 13-inch MacBook Air had crashed a number of times with a blank screen, and in a separate incident, experienced the same distortion issues reported by 11.6-inch MacBook users.
Adding credence to the reports, Macworld's Serenity Caldwell, who has been rocking the base model 11.6 inch model upgraded to 4 GB of RAM, reported that her own machine has been sputtering along as well:
"Sadly, I can personally confirm these issues: Just two days after unboxing my 11-inch Air—the base model with 4GB of RAM—the notebook randomly cut to a gray screen during Screen Sharing and only a reboot could cure it. In the ensuing days, I’ve seen my Air’s screen turn a variety of colors: gray again, tan, gray-black, and—on Monday—blue! (Let’s everyone get their Blue Screen of Death jokes out of the way now, please.)"
While these problems are hardly universal, it is disappointing to hear that so many users are experiencing difficulties from what should have been a satisfying purchase for them. There's little doubt that in the days to come, that should the reported issues be hardware related, Apple will take the steps necessary to remedy the situation.
