The folks at Valve just dropped the mother of all gaming news bombs: One of the most beloved and most played games in the world, Defense of the Ancients--widely known as DOTA--is getting the sequel treatment. Get ready for DOTA 2 on 2011!
For those not familiar with DOTA and its addictive game play, the game was originally built upon the backbone of Blizzard's Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and subsequent Frozen Throne expansion pack as a custom scenario. Chock full of real-time strategy and role-playing goodness, the goal of the scenario was for each individual or team participating in the game to destroy the opposing team's "Ancient"--a heavily fortified structure. While this may sound simple enough, DOTA is a subtle, complex affair that is easy to learn but wickedly difficult to master. Years after its original introduction, DOTA is still the corner stone of a large number of elite game competitions around the world. With the game's massive popularity and huge world-wide playerbase, it's no wonder that someone has opted to step up to the plate and make a sequel. In this case, that someone is IceFrog an independant studio that has paired up with Valve to unleash a second helping of awesome sauce to DOTA's dedicated legions of fans.
