It only took about a week since Apple started its countdown to 10 billion App Store downloads, but today it finally happened. Apple announced today that they have hit the magic number. As far as who was the lucky one to win the $10,000 iTunes gift card, that still has yet to be determined.
"Thank you. Ten billion times," read the countdown page. "The 10 Billion App Countdown promotion has ended. Please come back to this page later to see who won."
Apple originally started the promotion back on January 14, when there was still about 250 million downloads to go to reach the number. Downloads have certainly increased by leaps and bounds since the App Store's initial launch back in 2008. According to AppleInsider, it was in January 2010, when the App Store had topped 3 billion downloads.
With new iOS devices sure to be on the way, as well as the increasing lineup in the Mac App Store, 20 billion downloads surely can't be far away.
