Adobe may have given up on getting native Flash onto Apple’s iOS products (for now), but that doesn’t mean they haven’t continued searching for a back door onto the wildly popular devices. Their latest tactic is an Adobe Labs project codenamed “Wallaby,” which converts Flash into iOS-friendly HTML5.
Adobe Labs posted a new “experimental technology” on Monday night codenamed “Wallaby,” which the company is using to enable their Adobe Flash Professional users to convert projects into HTML5, which can then be viewed in supported browsers -- and of course, on iOS devices themselves.
“‘Wallaby’ is the codename for an experimental technology that converts the artwork and animation contained in Adobe Flash Professional (FLA) files into HTML,” Adobe Labs notes on their website. “This allows you to reuse and extend the reach of your content to devices that do not support the Flash runtimes. Once these files are converted to HTML, you can edit them with an HTML editing tool, such as Adobe Dreamweaver, or by hand if desired. You can view the output in one of the supported browsers or on an iOS device.”
Of course, Adobe Flash Professional is capable of some fairly complex files, so Adobe Labs cautions “not all Flash Professional features are supported in the HTML5 format.” Wallaby arrives with extensive release notes that outline which features the converter will handle, including compatibility among different browsers and currently known issues.
If you’re a Flash developer who’s itching to extend their reach onto iOS, you can download the preview version of Wallaby right now and then discuss it in Adobe Labs’ online forums.
