At the Classic Game Post-Mortem today at the Game Developers Conference, game designer Eric Chahi announced that his classic retro adventure game Out of This World is due to be re-released on the iPad soon. The game sold over a million copies back when it debuted in 1991 on the Commodore Amiga, Atari ST, Apple IIGS, and MS-DOS platforms, and was innovative for its technique of using just sound, actions, and facial expressions to communicate the story.
Now, I'm sure the youngsters out there will cackle with glee over what we used to consider a high-tech science fiction classic twenty years ago, but back off! Filled-vector graphics were the bees knees back in 19-diggity. In all seriousness, point-and-click adventure games of this type have had a good run on the iPad and iPhone, and we'll take as many as we can get. Beneath a Steel Sky and The Escapee are fairly close examples of what it seems like Out of the World has in store for iPad gamers.
No details were revealed regarding the game's release date or pricing. However, it's rare for iOS games to be announced any more than a couple months before their release, so we'll keep our eye on this one and let you know when it's prepped for release.
