If you’ve got a hankering for some good old-fashioned retro PC gaming, you probably remember the classic Cinemaware line that helped make the Commodore Amiga such a desirable platform back in the mid ‘80s. Now you can relive that fun on iOS, thanks to the arrival of a fully emulated Defender of the Crown game.
Manomio LLC has announced the release of their first Amiga game port, Defender of the Crown. The universal iOS emulation hit the App Store on Thursday in a fully licensed port of the classic Cinemaware title from 1986 which will bring back some very fond memories for those of you who preferred Commodore’s platform back in the day.
“The Age of Chivalry!” cries the App Store description. “A time of lusty wenches and black hearted villains. King Richard has been murdered and England is thrown into civil war! Amidst the ringing clash of steel and the thunder of charging steeds the bold Saxon knights have chosen you to lead them into battle against the hated Normans. Victory will not come easy. To save England your skills as swordsman and military leader will be severely tested. But should you succeed you'll win the Crown of England and the love of many a beautiful damsel!”
Manomio has worked with original software publisher Cinemaware to bring a fully emulated Amiga version of Defender of the Crown to the App Store, and the only thing missing are the floppy disks (well, and the Amiga itself) -- the rest of the experience is 100 percent faithful to the experience of playing this classic game.
For those of you too young to remember, Cinemaware was founded in 1985 and quickly became a favorite of Amiga users for their stylish, movie-themed games, including Rocket Ranger, It Came From the Desert, The Three Stooges and Lords of the Rising Sun -- and best of all, Manomio has pledged to help Cinemaware port at least some of those other classics to iOS, so this could be only the beginning of the fun. (Manomio is familiar to retro gamers as the developer who brought us the excellent Commodore 64 port for the iPhone.)
Defender of the Crown is now available on the App Store for $2.99; the universal app is compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, third and fourth generation iPod touch and any iPad running iOS 4.1 or later.
