The Angry Birds phenomenon is clearly unstoppable. While in the past the seminal iOS title was rivaled by other classics like Cut the Rope and Flight Control, the bird-flinging sensation has slingshotted completely off the map. While other iPhone successes are measuring their success in the thousands and millions, Angry Birds is in the tens and hundreds of millions. Is there no end to the anger?
In their relentless pursuit of the complete genocide of the green pig race, the Angry Birds will stop at nothing. In terms of cultural zeitgeist, it appears the birds are only just getting started. There was a flurry of jokes and recognition on late night TV last month about Rovio's million dollar flock, which may account for the game's extraordinary boost in sales and downloads.
Where many classic iOS games tend to plateau after a few million downloads (ala Pocket God, Flight Control etc) Angry Birds seems to only just be getting started. Back in the middle of March it was reported that Angry Birds had been downloaded for the 100 millionth time. Just a tad over a month later they've added 40 million downloads to that already astonishing number.
We're terrified to imagine a future where Angry Birds reaches a quarter billion. That may very well be where we're headed though. If Rovio can somehow continue this ridiculous pace then they'll hit that mark as soon as July. They almost certainly will not be able to maintain that momentum, but at the very least Rovio has reasserted themselves as the juggernaut of the App Store.
