Actor John Malkovich may not be the next actor you’d expect to see in a pair of Apple commercials following in the footsteps of Samuel L. Jackson and Zooey Deschanel, but that’s exactly who you’ll find discussing “Life” and “Joke” with Siri next.
Apple has posted two new iPhone 4S commercials focused on the powers of the Siri virtual assistant. The new ads again feature the bonus power of a celebrity, with acclaimed actor John Malkovich pontificating on life in the first spot, while trying to share a joke with Siri in the second.
The first commercial, simply named “Life,” finds Malkovich asking Siri the meaning of life.
“Try and be nice to people,” she responds. “Avoid eating fat. Read a good book every now and then. Get some walking in. And try to live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations.”
“That's pretty spectacular advice, actually,” Malkovich remarks before telling Siri, “Thank you. I enjoyed this chat immensely. You are very eloquent.”
“That's nice of you to say,” Siri responds dutifully.
The second commercial, “Joke,” finds Malkovich checking the weather and his evening schedule, searching for Linguica and finally getting Siri to tell a joke -- which she only knows the first half of. But Malkovich laughs anyway, remarking “That’s funny.”
These are just odd, I like Malkovich enough in most things but it feels like this set of commercials are just the self-indulgent whim of some egotistical Art Director.
