Apple Announces iPad Tablet Computer
[Updated]
Apple has filled in initial details about the hardware, pricing, and launch date. The iPad will ship in two models, one with Wi-Fi connectivity only, and one also with 3G through AT&T. Each version will ship at 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB configurations. Wi-Fi iPads will cost $499, $599, and $699; while Wi-Fi and 3G hardware will cost $629, $729, and $829.
Wi-Fi models will ship in 60 days, and 3G editions will be released in 90 days. 3G users will pay $14.99 for up to 250MB of data each month or $29.99 for unlimited downloading. Those fees will be pre-paid, so you'll be able to cancel service at any time. Additionally, those iPads will be unlocked, letting you swap in a GSM micro SIM card from another carrier.
Apple has announced the iPad tablet, a computer Steve Jobs says is positioned between a smartphone and a laptop. The full device is about the size of a sheet of paper, with the active display area measuring 9.7-inches. It's half-an-inch thick and weighs 1.5 pounds.
To justify creating a tablet computer, Jobs says it has to be better than either the laptop or phone at several tasks: web surfing, email, photo viewing, music and video playback, games, and eBook reading.
Apple includes applications for all of those targets that evoke the iPhone. However, since the iPad is about the size of a sheet of paper, there's more room for updated interfaces. For example, you can browse email with a list of messages on the left side of the screen, and the full text on the right.
Like the iPhone, the iPad lacks a physical keyboard. When you need to type, a large, QWERTY key set appears just like the iPhone. But since the screen is so much larger, the key shapes are nearly full-size.
Apple has updated the iTunes interface to take advantage of the screen size, and the full store is built-in, including movies, TV shows, and music videos. Like the iPhone, the device senses its screen orientation and can modify applications' layouts depending on how you hold the iPad.
The iPad will run any of the 140,000 apps already available for the iPhone and iPod touch, either in a window or at a doubled pixel size. Developers will also be able to update apps to take advantage of the larger resolution and faster processor.
The iPad runs a 1GHz Apple A4 processor and includes 16GB to 64GB of flash storage. It connects online through 802.11n Wi-Fi, and it includes Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR, a microphone, a speaker, Apple's proprietary 30-pin connector, and a compass. Apple says the battery will last 10 hours, even playing video the whole time.

A few more quick notes.A good comparison is a laptop to desktop. A laptop is more portable and more popular than a desktop computer. But it doesn't have the screen real estate or resources a desktop computer has. Same thing here. The iPod Touch is the laptop. So much more portable and still works great. But the iPad has more screen room and more power. And also, to the people, like me, who were disappointed at the fact that it doesn't run OS X, look at the name. Do you really think that Apple was crazy about that name? No. They're saving Tablet. A touch screen Mac is inevitable. This isn't the legendary Tablet. Sorry Robbie, but the rumors will return. So remember you read it here first. The Tablet will be a touchscreen Mac. This can't be the final product of the kind that Apple makes. So give them time, and they will deliver, as they always do. This is a mid-step, like the iPod Mini. Now there's the Nano, which is much better. So wait for the Nano (Tablet), because it will come, and appreciate the Mini (iPad) for what it is, another creation of Apple. Enough said there.

I am really amazed at how you people are hating the iPad. Its not the silver bullet to bring down Microsoft that everyone was hoping for, but it's still a great device. Just think of it this way. Its a giant iPod Touch. Why is this a bad thing? It's not. The iPod Touch is an amazing piece of technology, and its sales really show it. People that hate the iPad really haven't looked at it. Back to the iPod Touch. Its problems are all size related. Safari is hard to use, since its so small (but to be fair, it's better than other cell phone browsers by far). The iPad fixes this. Now you can see the entire page, or at least as much as a laptop could. And also the apps get an upgrade. First, the apps built for the iPad will be much better, since they can use more screen room and more resources. And the games will get the biggest boost. The controls will be out of the way of the game now, instead of filling the screen like the iPod Touch. So to wrap this up, the iPad is great. Its an alternate for the iPod Touch in my mind. If you want more screen room or would use it as an e-reader, then get the iPad. If you want a small, more mobile device for some fun quick games and simple apps, go with the iPod Touch. And I think people don't like it because they don't know what to compare it to. And that's exactly what Apple set out to do. Make their own category. And they did. So stop hating the iPad, just think of it as an iPod Touch Pro. Or a Newton...ON STEROIDS!

I'm curious if the 64G memory is all it's got. For a highly mobile crossover, it would be excellent for anyone who travels a lot, but you'd have to clean out the HD pretty regularly. One of the benefits of having something like this in remote areas is having music and select videos, computer and books all in one(very compact) place but a couple of movies and decent tunes library would hog up 64G's pretty fast. What's the computer interface situation.
Lot's of questions.

Just an oversized Touch. Needs a camera and needs to use flash with Safari. Many sites use flash and the bigger battery should allow this. I would like to see it run OS X instead of a glorified iPhone operating system.

the i pad is the biggest pice of crap i have ever seen. i own a macbook and an ipod touch, im only 19 and i can already do anything i want on my ipod touch and have it transferred to my mac why do i need the ipad its a freaking overgrown ipod touch/ iphone. yes it does cool things and i guess the only reasion for anyone to buy a ipad is for the e-reader other then that whats the point. the sharing screen thing is bogus too if i have something to share i put it up over our net work at home and on to the TV we have. their is no point to the i pad everything the ipad does i can do the same thing on my ipod touch

When I first saw this device, I thought about how it would fit into my own life... I have an older 20" iMac, a 13" MacBook Pro, and an iPhone. Looking at the features and considering what I do already own, I decided that it didn't do much more of anything than my iPhone or MBP, so therefore I'm not going to buy one. I will say that if I didn't own a MacBook Pro or iPhone, I would definitely get this.
I kind of began to question the demographic that Apple was aiming for, and then I realized that it would be a great device for my parents. They have a now well-aged iMac G4 which crawls the internet. They really don't see too much benefit from upgrading to a newer computer just to surf the internet, email, and view photos. A device like this would be perfect for them... I think $500 is a reasonable price, so much so that I'm thinking of finding a way to give this as a gift. While it won't be a total replacement for a computer, it will put a much better technology experience in their hands.
It may not prove to be as popular as an iPhone, but it's still kick-ass in it's own way and I'm interested to see where all of this goes.

I Think Apple has entered a whole new market, but I don't think it will be as popular as the iPhone 3G was a launch.

This is just an oversized iPod Touch! Even though it has some better apps, still! I wouldn't pay 500 bucks for this, it runs on the iPhone OS! It only would have been good if it had run on Mac OS X.
