We all know about Apple's massive data center in North Carolina that could see its grand opening anytime now. However, a new report reveals that Cupertino is building a little bit smaller similar facility in Santa Clara.
The new data storage space will be in a third-party facility, and will be on a smaller scale compared to the one in Maiden, NC. The new data center will only have 11,000 square feet set aside for data, compared to the 184,000 square feet in North Carolina.
The facility will be part of a seven-year lease, and will be built by DuPont Fabros Technology. It should open up sometime between July and September of this year.
While DuPont Fabros has not yet said that Apple is the tenant in the facility, they did mention their partnership was with a Fortune 50 company.
Data Center Knowledge believes that this will be Apple's first investment in a "wholesale data center," which is where tenants can lease a dedicated, fully-built data center space.
"This approach is attractive for companies that need to deploy additional data center space quickly, as wholesale space can be delivered more rapidly than building a new data center," notes the report.
Apple had originally selected the North Carolina data center site in 2009, and had aimed to open its doors by the end of 2010, but said during its annual investors meeting this year that it should open this spring.
Since May is on the downswing, we should find out the true purpose of these data centers any day now!
