While OS X’s learning curve has historically been easier than that of Windows or Linux, new Mac users are often daunted by the prospects of using a completely different operating system.
Apple offers training for new users, but today announced a detailed redesign of the program, called One to One. The most significant change to the program is that it is only available at the time of purchase. Furthermore, the service it is more targeted, and is broken down into specific programs: personal setup, training sessions, personal projects, and One-to-One workshops.
Personal setup is mainly a data migration service, moving your information from your old Mac or PC to your new shiny Mac. Given the built in Migration Assistant in Leopard, ongoing Mac users might want to skip that session.
However, the other three programs can help users with things like the iLife suite, customizing the computer, and troubleshooting new software. The workshops are set on a specific schedule, and One-to-One members can participate in them at any time, but the other two sessions are on a first come first served basis, that is, members can sign up online for personal or group sessions with Apple retail employees at an Apple Store of their choosing. Members can participate as much or as little as they want during the one year of service.
Obviously, this program is not for everyone. It costs $99, and for users that enjoy experimenting with their computer or figuring out problems on their own, the Internet has answers to almost anything. However, for those that are new to OS X that want some structured guidance, Apple employees are generally good at their job, and you can learn a lot in a short period of time.
Apple has also changed their renewal policy such that allows members that purchased One to One before June 2, 2009 the ability to renew their membership once, and those who buy it after June 2, 2009 can renew twice, and can have help setting up a new Mac at every renewal.
