Seems like only yesterday that Apple reached its first billion songs sold, and here we are counting down to 10 billion already.
On Thursday, Apple announced a new iTunes Store promotion, “Countdown to 10 Billion Songs,” according to MacRumors. The contest winner -- that is, the person to download the 10 billionth track -- will receive a prize in the form of an iTunes gift card worth $10,000.
As of Friday morning, the counter on iTunes was well north of 9.8 billion tracks and rising, so there’s no telling how soon that 10 billionth track will be sold.
The official contest rules state that participants may make up to 25 entries per day either by purchasing/downloading songs from the iTunes Store or by filling out an entry form on Apple’s website (no purchase necessary). The contest began on Thursday and ends as soon as the 10 billionth song is downloaded.
“The prize will be awarded for the entry (either through a song download or through the non-purchase online entry) sent immediately following the download of the 9,999,999,999th song,” Apple said. “The potential winner will be determined by the order of the entries received. In the event that more than one entrant would be a winner based on the simultaneous timing of entries, one entrant will be randomly selected from those entrants as the winner. Each entrants chances of winning are dependent upon the number of eligible entries received.”
Apple launched a similar contest for its one billionth song in 2006 and last year did the same for the App Store.
