Apple Designer Jonathan Ive Heading Back to UK? Not So Fast
It’s hard to imagine Apple’s future products without Jonathan Ive behind them, but recent reports claimed the iconic designer planned a return to his U.K. home turf -- rumors that are now being called false.
AppleInsider is reporting that a new profile on Apple’s Jonathan Ive in The Daily Mail is disputing recent reports that the 44-year-old designer is longing to return to his home in the United Kingdom, reportedly cashing in $30 million worth of stock options in the process. The report, which includes comments from both Ive friends and former colleagues, claims those rumors are indeed false.
“I’m not sure there is any truth he wants to come back,” said one former colleague. “My last conversations with him were that he was planning to sell his house in the U.K.”
Last month, a Times of London report claimed that Apple had their cherished product designer under a “golden handcuffs” deal dating back to 2008, pinning Ive’s personal net worth at a whopping $30 million today. Ive was said to have expressed interest in returning to a $4 million home in Somerset, U.K., which was being met with much resistance from Apple’s board of directors.
While disputing that report, The Daily Mail also laments the fact that Britain has lost a real talent with Ive, including comments from Sir James Dyson, the fabled inventor of the bagless vacuum cleaner of the same name. Dyson remarked that he wished Britain could keep the “brilliant minds” it has created -- but at least for now, it appears that Jonathan Ive is staying put with Apple in Cupertino, California.
