As competitors continue to venture back to the drawing board to figure out ways to top the iPad, research firm Canalys announced today that Apple took 74% of the tablet market in Q1. What is even more telling, is they figured that if you count the iPad, Apple's PC sales grew an astonishing 187.9% year over year!
"Canalys today announced that the PC market grew in Q1 2011, as the pad market, led by Apple's iPad, continued to bolster growth."
Canalys, the first research firm to count tablets as PCs, began its report on the results of the market in the first calendar quarter of 2011.
Due the success of the iPad, Apple was able to leap into third place in worldwide PC shipments in Canalys' Christmas quarter report, trailing only HP and Acer. In today's report, Dell had outsold Apple by 1.5 million units, dropping Apple to fourth place. One could only wonder what Apple's position could have been, had enough iPad 2s been readily available.

"Taking into consideration the iPad's 'halo effect' on the company's other products, Apple has grown considerably in most markets worldwide," noted Canalys analyst Tim Coulling. "As the iPad 2 and its competitors continue to roll out, we expect pad sales to propel PC market growth for the rest of the year."
Check out Canalys' report, which goes into great detail about how consumers use their tablets as well.
