Apple Has Enough iPad 2 Parts To Last 2-3 Weeks
Here we are a week later, and lines reportedly still continue to form for the second generation of the iPad. Shipping times are still at 4-5 weeks on Apple's site. Despite the continued onslaught of demand, Apple, along with its manufacturing partner in Foxconn, believe they have enough components on hand to be able to assemble new iPad 2s for at least another 2 to 3 weeks before a potential stockout that would put production on ice if the tragic situation in Japan does not improve.
AppleInsider is reporting that even though they didn't opt to comment on specific clients per se, Foxconn has continually stated that they don't forsee any component shortages in the short term, and has already prepared backup suppliers for parts used to manufacture customer products even though the situation in Japan has caused a shortage of components throughout the industry.
DigiTimes also notes that even if supplies should fall into a shortage, Foxconn is still on top of its game versus competitors in terms of being able to secure supplies. DigiTimes added that "market watchers" are also nothing that Foxconn should still have "about 2-3 weeks of component inventory left as IT players normally keep a certain level of inventory on hand for safety."
An earlier report from Piper Jaffray revealed that the shutdown of at least two of Apple's Japanese component suppliers may cause shortages of the iPad 2 - and the iPhone 4 - into the June quarter.
