In a WWDC keynote address packed with new MacBooks and previews of both OS X Mountain Lion and iOS 6, Apple had little time to talk about a refresh to its $99 AirPort Express, which is now available for sale.
Apple has quietly introduced a refresh of the $99 AirPort Express, adding simultaneous dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi for your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac or PC. The new model is available now from the Apple Online Store with immediate shipping.
The new AirPort Express also gets a nod in an update to Apple’s free AirPort Utility app for iOS, and we would expect new Mac and PC software to appear soon as well to take advantage of the updated unit.
Unlike the older style AirPort Express that plug directly into a wall outlet, the new model is a diminutive square (think of a white Apple TV) requiring a power cable. While that may seem a tad inconvenient, the dual-band Wi-Fi will likely more than make up for it, especially in homes and offices with mixed devices.
The revamp of the AirPort Express marks the first major refresh of the tiny box since 2008, while retaining the same $99 price point as previous models. Apple is now accepting orders for the new AirPort Express, which shows as in stock with free shipping.
