Apple Licenses iOS Name From Cisco
The new name that Apple has been slinging around for it's mobile operating system--iOS--was licensed from Cisco Systems. You see, Cisco has been using the IOS name for close to 20 years. As stated in a press release on Cisco's website:
Cisco has agreed to license the iOS trademark to Apple for use as the name of Apple’s operating system for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. The license is for use of the trademark only and not for any technology.
IOS, or Internetwork Operating System is the software utilized to run the vast majority of Cisco's routers and network switches.

They had to do the same thing with the iPhone. Cisco owns the trademark on the name iPhone and had 4 or 5 products out under than name when Apple announced their "iPhone".
