Well, here we go again. Last year, the Apple vs. Samsung legal battle was one of the most high-profile stories in tech. And Apple's big win, to the tune of $1.05 billion in damages, was a massive windfall for Cupertino. But today, it seems Judge Koh has voided nearly half of the judgement award, declaring a new trial must be held to sort out the remaining details.
According to FOSS Patents, Koh has vacated $450 million of the over one-billion dollars awarded to Apple in the company's U.S. case against Samsung last year. Koh arrived at the number by admitting that jurors had lacked clarity in regards to 14 Samsung products, and if Apple wishes to proceed, the whole affair will require a new trial.
Yes, there is a chance there's going to be yet another damages trial between Apple and Samsung. Get your popcorn.
Summing everything up, Apple is owed almost $600 million in damages from Samsung, and a resulting second trial could mean less, or more, money base upon the 14 Samsung products Koh decided were misjudged. Apple has also sought interest on the money owed, which the court agreed would be set at 0.16-percent.
But no matter how this works out, Apple likely won't see a dime until the entire issue is put to rest. When will that be? Who knows.
