It's being deemed an "extremely small" recall, but some Verizon iPad 2s have had duplicate MEID codes flashed onto iPads for the Verizon 3G network. One Apple Store employee has already claimed having to send over a hundred units back.
"Duplicate MEID codes were flashed onto an extremely small number of iPad units for the Verizon 3G network," said an Apple spokeswoman, but they declined to say how many units had been affected.
Verizon also declined to comment.
MEID stands for mobile equipment identifier, and is a unique number that is used to identify a mobile device when it connects to the network. The problem is that two units cannot have the same MEID code.
Apple is replacing the affected units that were already sold with new ones.
9 to 5 Mac had reportedly received an update from an Apple Store employee regarding the issue:
Apple has given all the stores a list of serial numbers to scan, if it's a match we were told to set aside and ship back to Apple, these are only for Verizon iPads. This was to be done on Monday and continue to scan all shipments thru June 11. I had over one hundred to send back.
