Apple will release iTunes 9 today, a significant update to the company's media management tool. iTunes 9 will sync better, improve iPhone app organization, lightly integrate social networks, and feature other improvements.
Syncing updates sound dull but could be the core of the new functionality, with network syncing making its debut. Up to 5 user-authorized computers on a network will be able to copy songs and other media in addition streaming. iTunes will even facilitate library syncing, so you can keep two laptops loaded with your current purchases, for example.
iPod syncing improves, with the ability to transfer all songs by a certain musician, genre, or other factor. iPhoto will also sync Faces-recognized people and events. Syncing by those restrictions had previously required customized smart albums.
iPhone and iPod touch owners will finally be able to organize apps directly from a Mac or PC. iTunes will show all of the home screens, letting you drag apps around or even reorder those whole pages.
A bunch of additional, moderate improvements round out the new software, such as an update to Genius music recommendations. Within iTunes, Facebook and Twitter users can add links to the store on those social services. Movie purchases can come with extras that are similar to DVD bonus content, while music "LP" sales will include notes, photos, and other additions. An iTunes Store redesign also updates its navigation.
