Without much fanfare, Apple released an Apple TV software update today, now version 4.1.1 for the second-generation Apple TV. The update provides a fix for various issues with TVs that were displaying an incorrect resolution and a downloading problem for situations when movies or TV shows get re-downloaded.
Only weeks before, software update 4.1 added AirPlay support and fixed some odds and ends with performance and connectivity issues.
The support documents according to Apple read that the 4.1.1 update fixes "an issue that causes some high-definition TVs to incorrectly display at 480p" and "an issue that may cause a movie or TV show to be re-downloaded."
According to AppleInsider, a reader discovered that the update fixed a flickering issue with their TV. "My TV (Fujitsu) 42" (2004 model) only has a DVI port (no HDMI)," they write. "I use a HDMI to DVI cable to watch the Apple TV content. Previously, the TV flickered on the top and on the right. After the update, the flickering was gone. The system works perfectly fine now."
However, the Apple support forum thread also delves into the HDMI connection issue, and several users maintained that after installing the 4.1.1 update, it did not exactly correct their HDMI "handshaking" issues, which would cause inverted colors or solid color images.
