What seemed like one of the major selling points of the Apple TV has now been taken away from the popular set-top box. Apple has removed the ability to rent 99-cent shows. You can no longer find the option to rent shows from the Apple TV menu screen.
Participating networks used to offer the ability to rent an episode on the Apple TV for 99 cents, but the evidence shows that this feature no longer exists. The option to rent from the Apple TV interface has been removed, and Apple has taken down the support page that walks you through how to rent TV shows.
Additionally, Apple no longer makes mention of the feature on the official page for the Apple TV.
The page once said this:

And it now says this:

No mention whatsoever of the capabilities to rent. For shame.
Apple has not released any word about its decision to remove rentals from Apple TV, but it sounds like a good indicator that the company just didn't see a future in that type of model. After all, with sites like Netflix and Hulu offering plenty of TV shows for streaming, why would anyone want to pay? And if you were renting because you didn't have cable, you're better off buying the season's pass on iTunes than paying per-episode.
