Apple continues to put some distance between Mac OS X and Java, releasing an update on Tuesday night that removes the last remaining traces of the product from OS X Lion or higher.
Apple has released Java for OS X 2012-006 on Tuesday, an "update" that actually cleans house on the company's last vestige of Java SE 6 version 1.6.0_37 with OS X Lion or higher.
"This update uninstalls the Apple-provided Java applet plug-in from all web browsers," the support note explains. "To use applets on a web page, click on the region labeled 'Missing plug-in' to go download the latest version of the Java applet plug-in from Oracle.
"This update also removes the Java Preferences application, which is no longer required to configure applet settings," the support note concludes.
Java for OS X 2012-006 is available via Software Update for OS X Lion, or via the Mac App Store Updates section with OS X Mountain Lion.
