At this morning's WWDC, Apple has introduced a fully redesigned MacBook Pro line at 17-, 15-, and 13-inch screen sizes. All of the laptops use Apple's touted unibody aluminum design, all include a non-removable battery, and all ship today.
The laptops see a significant speed boost, reaching up to 3.06GHz with an Intel Core 2 Duo. Models include up to 8GB RAM, a 500GB hard drive or 250GB solid-state drive, and Nvidia 9400M integrated graphics. At the higher end, the laptops add a dedicated Nvidia 9600M GT chipset for faster visual processing. Base prices range from $1,199 to $2,499, in most cases several hundred dollars cheaper than before.
The laptops include similar inputs and outputs as prior models, including FireWire 800. The 17-inch model keeps its ExpressCard slot--which had been standard on all--but the others lose that in favor of an SD Card slot. That seems like an odd swap to us, since the slots serve different purposes, but we've hardly ever used ExpressCard.
Apple says the built-in lithium-polymer battery will last up to 7 hours, even with the updated displays on the line. And like the prior 17-inch model, Apple rates these to last 1,000 recharges before needing battery replacement; that's roughly five years of use instead of the typical one to two years on other laptops.
Partly because of the battery technology, Apple is still claiming that these are the most environmentally friendly laptops. All are certified to meet the Energy Star 5 and EPEAT Gold standards.
