Apple Seeds Mac OS X 10.6.6, No Demo Versions in Mac App Store
Apple released a new version of Mac OS X 10.6.6 to developers on Thursday night which could be a potential gold master, while notifying Mac App Store developers that they’ll have to host their own demos, trials and betas.
MacRumors is reporting that Apple has seeded another version of Mac OS X 10.6.6 to developers on Thursday, four weeks after the initial build was made available prior to the public release of 10.6.5.
The new Build 10J537 features “developer support for fetching and renewing App Store receipts,” with a focus on Bonjour, Dock, OpenGL, Printing and Spotlight. The combo update version is a whopping 1,000MB (better known as 1GB) in size.
Perhaps the biggest news about this new seed is that it may be a potential gold master, meaning it could be released to the public in the near future. Developers in the Mac App Store program are reporting that this version is listed as a gold master when they access it from Apple’s website; however, regular Mac developers are not seeing this designation.
In other Mac App Store news, 9to5Mac is reporting that Apple has informed developers that the forthcoming storefront will not accept demos, trial versions or betas, instead encouraging developers to post those versions on their own websites.
“Your website is the best place to provide demos, trial versions, or betas of your software for customers to explore,” the Mac App Store Submission Tip reads. “The apps you submit to be reviewed for the Mac App Store should be fully functional, retail versions of your apps.”
This doesn’t come as much of a surprise, given that the iOS App Store has long held the same policy, although many developers choose to offer “Lite” versions of their apps there for free in an effort to tempt buyers into purchasing.
