AT&T truly is the carrier we all love to hate. They have continued what seems like a trend of daily screw ups. This time, according to Sean Kovacs' blog, AT&T seems to have requested that Apple to remove the popular third-party app, GV Mobile, from the App Store.
GV Mobile was an app developed by Sean Kovacs to utilize the features of Google Voice on the iPhone, since there was no official app from Google for it (which you might want to know, Google DOES have an official app but Apple rejected it since this GV Mobile incident).
If AT&T truly believes that Google Voice is a threat, why does it work with other AT&T smartphones like the BlackBerry. For some reason, they are threatened with it only on the iPhone, but no other smartphone they carry.
GV Mobile has been in the App Store for a while, and was even personally approved by Phil Schiller himself, who called Kovacs and apoligized for a delay in getting the app approved. Originally, Apple's excuse was that GV Mobile "duplicated features of the iPhone," but it seemed that most of us thought it was something more than that. But now, from the screenshot above, it is confirmed that Apple has pulled the app by request of AT&T (as well as a second app, VoiceCentral, and rejecting Google's official app).
For the record, Kovacs has found a way to bypass the App Store pull and GV Mobile is now free for jailbroken iPhones via Cydia.
