If you’re one of the handful of folks still using a non-hacked Apple TV, fire that sucker up: There’s an update waiting for you. The rest of you should read on.
Apple released an update to the Apple TV last night, bringing the box up to 3.0.2. But a clear indication of just how minor the update is -- there’s not a single mention of what it does.
Users have reported to AppleInsider that the update seems to be related to Tuesday’s release of Aperture 3, specifically adding support for iPhoto’s Faces and Places features as well as how the pro photo software shares images over the local network.
It’s also possible some bug fixes were part of the 3.0.2 update, with other users claiming the patch has solved some problems related to switching the device’s HDMI output cable. And last but not least, there appear to be some minor tweaks to the user interface which enhance the readability of the on-screen text.
Of course, if you’re among the adventurous souls who have made their Apple TV far more useful by way of
ATVFlash or other such hacks to enjoy XBMC, Boxee, nitoTV, Firefox and other applications on your box, such a modest update should be avoided for now. The ATVFlash gang have already reported via Twitter and
their forum that the 3.0.2 update breaks a few features of their software, but a compatible update will be available soon.
The rest of you can download and install Apple TV 3.0.2 for absolutely free by hitting the Update Software option within the Settings > General menu on your box.
