"There's an app for that."
Who hasn't heard this line before? It's the ever popular line from the series of iPhone ads that show consumers whatever it is that they want to do, it's possible to do it with an iPhone. But there are people in the UK that didn't think this was the case.
Ten people had filed complaints to The Advertising Standards Authority, claiming that the iPhone ads were misleading. The phrase "only on the iPhone" according to the citizens behind the complaint, creates an impression that the apps seem to be only available on the iPhone platform. The complaints noted that the G1 also has a marketplace for downloadable applications (think Shazam, which is a multi-platform application).
Apple held firmly on their position that the "only for the iPhone" statement is that it directly follows "there's an app for just about everything." The company also claims they have a more unique experience for users than the competition, touting the number of apps available (over 65,000 at this point in time) and also the multi-touch capabilities of the device.
The ASA takes the side of Apple and says that the "viewers would understand the claim "only on the iPhone" to refer to the range of apps available and the user experience of the App Store and the iPhone and not that they were the only company to provide applications for mobile phones.”
With this, Apple can still continue to show the ads on TV, since they were "justified and not misleading."
