Apple has released the Apple TV 2.2 update today. You can download the update directly from your Apple TV via the "Update Software" menu option in the Apple TV's settings menu. The update, like others before it, addresses some security issues, but it also includes these new features:
- Genius playlists like iTunes 8 (must activate first in iTunes 8)
- Purchase and playback of HD TV shows (US only)
- Music Video Playlists are supported
- On-the-Go Playlists
- Standby Option
- Enhancements to movie descriptions
- Access Chapter selection, alternate audio and subtitles using play/pause button while watching a movie
- Movie browsing by actor and director in the iTunes store
One note about the standby option - this is a way of "turning off" the Apple TV. This is accomplished by pressing and holding the Play/Pause button for about three seconds or going to the Settings menu and selecting Standby. This addresses complaints about the Apple TV getting hot and wasting electricity.
Forunately, Apple doesn't seem to be ignorning it's "hobby," the Apple TV.
