Fortune reported this morning that William Blair's Anil Doradla noted to company clients that the iPhone is no longer the bestseller at Verizon for the first time since February 2011, when it first started offering the smartphone.
Doradla observed that the lack of remodel and the 4G shortfall in the iPhone line is the main reason users are choosing Motorola's Droid RAZR MAXX, the now leading smartphone at Verizon, over the iPhone 4S.
The Droid RAZR MAXX offers many other coveted features that the iPhone does not. The two most talked about features are the larger 4.3-inch screen filling the black Android device, and the removable 16GB microSD card. The iPhone 4S on the other hand only offers a 3.5-inch screen and up to 64GB of non-removable storage.
The new iPad released this past March included the highly anticipated 4G LTE capabilities, almost guaranteeing that the next generation iPhone will offer the function as well. Doradla tossed his iPhone worries aside and assured that the iPhone will keep up amongst the bestsellers at Verizon.
"We believe the anticipated launch of a 4G device from Apple this fall will be an important catalyst for the company as consumers upgrade their phones, and we expect the company to once again maintain its top position at all operators (including Verizon Wireless)."
Don’t expect iPhone to be number two for long.
Update: New information by Michael Walkley, an analyst with Canaccord Genuity, says that the iPhone still holds the number spot, reports Apple Insider.
"But that's not the case, according to Walkley, who said while the latest Razr is "gaining ground," it "hasn't caught iPhone." His own research has found the iPhone 4S as the top selling smartphone at Verizon, as well as AT&T and Sprint, for the entirety of 2012 thus far."
