AT&T may not have had the insane second quarter that partner Apple did, they’re still rockin’ the iPhone like a hurricane, with 3.6 million of the handsets activated over the last three months and nearly a quarter of those were new customers.
BGR is reporting that AT&T’s financials are in for the second quarter of 2011, and the wireless division is still going strong with Apple’s iPhone. Overall, AT&T racked up $31.5 billion in consolidated revenues, up 2.2 percent from the same quarter last year -- while it may sound small, that amounts to $680 million, in case you were wondering.
On the wireless front, AT&T claimed their best-ever second quarter for smartphone sales of 5.6 million, making up nearly 70 percent of their postpaid (i.e., contract) sales. That figure includes the iPhone, which made up 3.6 million of those smartphones, 24 percent of whom were new customers. Android also held its own at AT&T, with sales doubling year over year and making up 40 percent of the company’s overall smartphone sales.
All in all, AT&T appears to be surviving just fine without an exclusive on the iPhone, showing the analysts that there’s life after Apple. The company showed a 9.5 percent growth in wireless revenue overall, with a 7.4 percent increase in wireless service revenue. The numbers are sure to look even better for next quarter, with a new iPhone expected to arrive in September.
