It is dumb that AT&T acts like T-Mobile has already started doing this. On one level, it was annoying to pay full price for an iPhone, but it also meant no change in our monthly bill. We could of course set up payments, but chose not to. Change is hard I guess. My wife still expect to get a free phone when she has to upgrade, which is all but gone at least through T Mobile.

Don't let them fool you. They're not taking a hit by giving you a lower priced phone. You're paying for that phone over the life of the plan you're locked into for 2 years. The only reason they'd change this model is that most folks would rather not be locked into a 2 year plan and the competitors are addressing that desire.
