If cost of entry has been a barrier to keep you from jumping on board the iPhone bandwagon, AT&T may have just removed that from the equation -- effective Friday, the previous-generation iPhone 3GS will now be only $49 with a two-year agreement.
AT&T has announced that effective Friday, December 7, the iPhone 3GS will get a new price of only $49 for both new and upgrade-eligible existing customers. The deal will be effective at the company’s website as well as more than 2,200 AT&T retail locations, business channels and of course, Apple themselves.
What’s the catch? Just the same as always -- a new two-year wireless voice agreement of $39.99 or higher as well as a minimum $15 per month data plan, credit approval required and an activation fee of $36 per line. The rest, it would appear, is simply AT&T’s effort to clear the decks of the previous model, perhaps sensing that the iPhone 4 may soon make the leap to competitor Verizon Wireless.
“We want to deliver the best, most complete package for our customers -- from price, to speed, to worldwide access and more,” said David Christopher, chief marketing officer of AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets in a company press release. “Combined with our new, lower monthly data plans beginning at just $15 a month, this new price brings even more value to one of the most popular devices in our leading lineup of smartphones. We’re very excited for more people to experience iPhone on the nation's fastest mobile broadband network.”
How about it, stragglers? Does a $49 price of entry make you throw caution to the wind and jump on board the iPhone 3GS?
