The release of the iPhone 5 has helped keep the iPad mini rumors at bay, but Barnes & Noble is stirring the pot again on Wednesday by introducing a pair of high-resolution tablets squarely aimed at Amazon and Apple.
Barnes & Noble has announced new seven and nine-inch HD tablets which appear to be the company's response to Amazon's latest product offerings introduced earlier this month.
NOOK HD is the company's latest $199 seven-inch media tablet which offers "a newly invented, brilliant display that delivers the highest quality text, graphics and video experience in a seven-inch media tablet." Featuring a 1440 x 900 resolution display at 243 pixels per inch and 720p HD video playback, the NOOK HD will be available in 8GB or 16GB ($229) versions in "Snow" or "Smoke" colors.
If a bigger display is what you crave, NOOK HD+ is billed as "the lightest and lowest-priced full HD tablet ever" starting at $269 for 16GB, with a 32GB also available for $299. The larger model features a 1920 x 1280 display at 256 ppi, perfect for viewing 1080p HD movies or TV shows.
Both products are available for preorder now and will ship in late October, with in-store availability in early November. The company also announced NOOK Video with UItraViolet support, offering a wide range of movies and television shows from their own digital storefront, as well as upgrades to the NOOK magazine and newspaper offerings.
