Already having its own eBook product in the Nook, and eReader software for the PC, Mac, iPhone, iPod Touch and Blackberry devices, Barnes & Noble is not wasting any time getting in with the iPad by planning eReader software for that device as well, according to InformationWeek.
The effort is a plan to veer users of the iPad to Barnes & Noble's online bookstore away from Apple's upcoming iBook store.
Barnes & Noble's software will be designed specifically for the iPad and is being timed to be released about the same time as when the iPad is released on April 3. The software will provide access to more than 1 million e-books and periodicals on the company's eBookstore. Any books that were purchased for the Nook, will also be available through the eReader. The company is planning on updating the eReader software applications already available for the PC, Mac, iPhone, iPod Touch and Blackberry devices shortly.
One can certainly expect Amazon to follow suit as well with its Kindle software. The eBook/tablet competition is only heating up as Hewlett-Packard is planning on releasing its own tablet with similar features to the iPad, and both Samsung and Dell are planning on developing their own eReader devices as well. Samsung is partnering with Barnes & Noble, which is planning to open up its online store to Samsung's product.
