This morning we were met with news that The Beatles catalog in the iTunes store was a no go for tomorrow's Apple Event.
Sir Paul McCartney told NME that he blamed EMI for the delay in getting the Fab Four on the iTunes store. If anyone would know, it would be one of the former Beatles. Paul told NME, "We were having problems with iTunes – well not iTunes, EMI was the problem – with downloading, which we'd like to do because that's how a lot of people get their music."
Backing up Sir Paul's claim, was EMI's global catalog president, Ernesto Schimtt. Ernesto told the Financial Times that, "Conversations between Apple and EMI are ongoing and we look forward to the day when we can make the music available digitally. But it's not tomorrow."
Well that settles it, the former Beatle and the guy at EMI who should know what they're talking about. Not so fast folks. It looks like Yoko Ono has her own timetable concerning The Beatles catalog being available on iTunes.
Yoko told Sky News that (link is dead as of press time) The Beatles catalog would be available on iTunes possibly as soon as tomorrow.
So either Paul and Ernesto are telling the truth and Yoko didn't get the memo about the licensing issues between EMI and Apple, or Yoko just spilled the beans and Paul and Ernesto were trying to pull a fast one on us.
At this point, we don't know what to believe. All we know is that having The Beatles on iTunes would be fab, were just not holding our breath waiting for it to happen.
UPDATE 1: So Sky News has yet to issue a retraction, update, or even place the article back on their site. At this point, we're guessing either they weren't supposed to post the article, or the story was a mistake or bogus. We've contacted Sky News for more information.
UPDATE 2: A Sky News employee spoke with 9to5Mac and told the site that they were told to cut the story and not to comment. Of course, saying they were told to cut the story is a comment. The instruction to cut the article came from "the very top." Can you smell a conspiracy? Did Yoko say too much or was she mistaken? We'll find out tomorrow.
What do you think will happen tomorrow?
