Believe It or Not: iPhone Survives 2 Months Outside in Canadian Winter!
Next time an iPhone naysayer tries to tell you that your handset is way too fragile for day to day use, sit them down and tell them the story of a device that survived two months outside in a rough Canadian winter. The Loop’s Jim Dalrymple has the “strange but true” tale of Canadian Chris Noble (who also happens to be the developer of iTouch My Friends for the iPhone). Poor Chris lost his iPhone while ice fishing up in the Great White North -- two months ago!
The seemingly sad tale has a very happy ending. Chris discovered the handset outside by his ice hut! But, is it possible that the iPhone could still work after two cold months outside? You know those Canadian winters, they’re brutal!
Chris has the answer on his blog:
“I quickly threw it into a bag of rice and placed it under a lamp to defrost. Three hours later I plugged it in. I wasn’t expecting much. I mean, really, it had been frozen in snow for the last two months! To my surprise, the phone displayed the low battery message.”
And wouldn’t you know it: Chris popped a SIM card into the device and it’s working like a charm. Can your Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Symbian or WebOS device say the same?

I actually has a similar experience with my wife's Palm Centro a few months ago. I alsways hated the thing but I have to say, after it started up after 6 months in the elements I was impressed. I wrote it up over on Gear Diary... Pretty amazing actually.
