Okay, let’s be honest here: You read this site frequently (we hope!), so you probably know that a new iPhone 5 is just around the corner. So would you really want a two-year old iPhone 3GS, even if it was free with two-year contract? Best Buy is hoping the answer to that question is “yes.”
Best Buy has announced a one day only deal on the iPhone 3GS 8GB model (AT&T only, naturally) -- it’s absolutely free with activation of a two-year agreement. The only catch is you’ll have to be quick, because the deal is only valid in Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile stores today, Monday, August 22, 2011 and while supplies last.
Now, setting aside the fact that an iPhone 5 is imminent -- early October, according to those who claim to know more than anyone else -- a free phone is still a free phone, and the iPhone 3GS continues to be a capable device that will be upgradable to iOS 5 when it’s released this fall. Maybe you have a parent or kid looking for a new handset on your AT&T Family Plan, and this might be perfect for them.
That said, two years is an awfully long time, and it’s quite likely whoever you decide to buy this handset for will miss out on the iPhone 5 and most likely the iPhone 6 by jumping on board this deal. So, you’ve been warned, then.
Best Buy’s free 8GB iPhone 3GS is available with “a qualified upgrade or two-year new activation” in store only, although you can place an order on the company’s website for in-store pickup as well (no ship to home orders, sorry). As always, the deal requires an AT&T data plan which starts at $15 per month, and the bargain goes bye-bye at the stroke of midnight tonight -- so get it while the gettin’s good.
