(Image courtesy of MacRumors)It seems that nearly everyone in the corporate world is convinced the iPad will change the world, with the latest being one of the major television networks, who appear to be readying iPad-friendly versions of their videos.
MacRumors is reporting on the changes at
CBS.com, which were
first noted by The Other Mac Blog. Since Adobe Flash is missing in action on the iPad, a number of companies have been switching their video to the iPad-friendly HTML5 -- and it appears that CBS.com may be one of them.
Rather than ditching Flash entirely for the videos on the CBS.com website, it appears that the network is testing some iPad alternate links.
As noted by The Other Mac Blog, a few “iPad - test” video links had popped up on the CBS.com website -- although when viewing those links on a normal desktop browser, you’re taken to the Flash version of the video.
However, when visiting CBS.com using the iPad SDK simulator (or alternately, spoofing your browser’s User Agent to impersonate an iPad,
as MacRumors notes), you are sent to an entirely different version of the video as seen above.
Although the new version of the video isn’t working, it appears to be based on HTML5. “The css files reference HTML5 and have a number of ‘webkit’ specific calls,” MacRumors claims. Webkit, of course, is the browser engine behind Safari, including the iPad’s mobile version of same. The CBS.com HTML5 page also includes a “fullscreen mode” which reportedly already works in the SDK simulator.
Given the current backlash against Adobe Flash -- which is not and may never be compatible with the iPhone OS -- Apple has been pushing for HTML5 as an alternative solution. With
CBS.com at least dabbling in that sandbox, it’s probably just a matter of time before others do the same, especially if the iPad is as wildly successful as many seem to believe. Hulu, are you paying attention?
