Does anyone see the irony of releasing an iPhone-connected blood pressure monitor at an event like the Consumer Electronics Show? Apparently Withings doesn’t, and they’re rolling out the device this week for a cool $129.
Engadget is reporting that Withings, a company best known for Internet-connected body scales, has released the “world’s first iPhone-connected blood pressure monitor” at CES 2011. The device goes on sale Wednesday worldwide for the asking price of $129.
“The idea is fairly simple: just plug the arm band into your iPad, iPod touch or iPhone, dial up the gratis app and start the process,” Engadget notes. “All of the data is logged on the user's secure online space, and there's even a secure sharing feature that'll beam your abnormally high rates right to your frightened physician.”
We’re guessing that most potential customers of this device probably would be better off not knowing what their blood pressure is throughout the day for fear of raising it further, but the battery-powered monitor is still a great idea (it requires four AAA batteries, which are supplied).
“Apple revolutionized the world of smartphones by making them user-friendly like never before,” says Withings co-founder Cédric Hutchings in the company's press release. “By adding connectivity to high-tech devices, we simplify their usage and enrich them with extra services. Our goal is to take the drama out of using devices that can promote healthier lifestyles for all. We have achieved this with our Withings body scales, and are now repeating our success with the Withings Blood Pressure monitor.”
The Withings Blood Pressure Monitor also works with the iPod touch or iPad and is available now from the company’s website.
