Although the screen resolution of the next iPad continues to be the subject of much debate, a new batch of photos from a Chinese repair shop appear to show that the iPad 2 display will, at the very least, be thinner and lighter than the original model.
9to5Mac has nabbed an exclusive with the help of iFixYouri.com, which appears to be the LCD screen for an iPad 2 from a parts supplier in China. The websites snapped a barrage of photos of the alleged iPad 2 display next to the original iPad screen, and made a few observations on what may be coming.
“At this point, we cannot tell if the resolution is higher (or ‘Retina’) but it is definitely higher quality in terms of its build,” writes Mark Gurman for 9to5Mac. “The iPad 2′s display is also lighter, and over a mm thinner than the current iPad’s display with a smaller surrounding frame. This is a dream for a product designer like Jony Ive who now has some more tapering options for what looks to be a significantly lighter iPad 2.”
According to a 9to5Mac commenter named “King,” the screen part appears to be an “LG Phillips 9.7in XGA 1024x768 H-IPS display” -- which appears to rule out being a true “Retina Display” like the iPhone 4, but is definitely a step up from the original iPad.
Something tells us that we’ll all know soon enough if this is the real deal or not, as the next iPad is widely expected to at least be announced in the next month or so.
