There are plenty of good remote access apps for the iPhone and iPod touch which will surely get an upgrade to take advantage of the extra real estate on the iPad. But one big name in the corporate world has already announced their client app for the iPad is a done deal.
Just Another iPad Blog is reporting that Citrix, a leading name in the corporate world for secure remote access, has already ported their Citrix Receiver iPhone app client to the iPad -- or at least, the SDK simulator, since the hardware itself isn’t shipping until late March.
“If your company has XenDesktop or XenApp you will be happy to know you will be able to use your iPad for real work as well,” Citrix announced
via their company blog. “It turns out the 9.7 inch display on the iPad with a 1024×768 screen resolution works great for a full VDI XenDesktop. Windows applications run unmodified and securely in the data center, and even multiple applications at once.
“The advancements that were made for Citrix Receiver for iPhone will carry over to the iPad, however the iPhone restrictions of screen size and small keyboards are overcome with the iPad,” the company describes. “It’s a beautiful thing! The iPad looks to be an ideal end point device that can empower users to be productive were ever they are and IT will be able to safely deliver company hosted virtual desktops and apps without worry.”
Such apps will likely be welcome to desktop PC users and IT technicians alike. We have a feeling that we’re going to start seeing fewer laptops and more iPads in the future, especially as Wi-Fi continues to take hold, even in the skies above us. Time will tell!
