While many websites assemble “best of” lists at this time of year, CNN has weighed in with their ten biggest tech “fails” for 2010, and Apple has hit two of the spots -- one for the iPhone 4 “Antennagate” crisis and another for the Ping social network attempt.
MacRumors is reporting that CNN has compiled a list of 2010’s biggest tech “fails” which highlight “technology and Internet products and features that failed most spectacularly during the year.” Despite riding high for most of the year, Apple fills two of the ten slots.
The iPhone 4 “Antennagate” crisis ranked as CNN’s number one tech fail in 2010, although the article does acknowledge that “fail” probably shouldn’t apply to something that has been (and continues to be) wildly successful.
“First Apple said the problem didn't exist,” CNN notes. “Then they said it was a software issue. Then they kind-of admitted it existed and gave away free cases to help. Then, they said it doesn't really exist anymore and stopped giving away the bumpers. Months later, the problem is all but forgotten and the phones show no sign of dipping in popularity. So ‘fail,’ in this case, is a pretty relative term.”
CNN’s top ten list is bookended by another Apple product in the number 10 spot, which is the company’s music-themed social network, Ping, introduced in early September with iTunes 10 to a yawn.
“There’s a whole social network set up in Apple's iTunes store now,” CNN writes. “Didn't know that? Well, there you go.” Can’t argue with that, although Apple has made a few improvements to Ping since September and there are likely many more to come.
Among the non-Apple tech fails for 2010 are 3D television, Microsoft’s failed Kin social phones and rival Google, who also landed on the list with two products -- the Nexus One smartphone and the Buzz network.
