News junkies searching the App Store may have noticed a welcome addition. CNN released a free app for the iPad today. In addition to that, they also eliminated the fee for the mobile app.
"CNN is a brand of scale and at its best when it's in the hands of as many people as possible," notes KC Estenson, senior vice president and general manager of CNN.com. "Making it free will unleash a whole new audience."
Since October 2009, approximately 2 million people have downloaded CNN's mobile apps for as much as $1.99 in the U.S. Three months ago, CNN dropped the price of the mobile app to 99 cents in an effort to try and gain more downloads for a larger audience.
Estenson claimed that plopping a price tag on apps makes it more exclusive.
The app for the iPad highlights news, photos and videos. It also features comments that run with the news.
CNN is also planning on constructing tablet apps for Google's Android and RIM's BlackBerry as well.
The app is available on iTunes now.
