Cocktail Could Be a File Format

When the Financial Times put out a story last month
detailing a project between Apple and major record labels named
“Cocktail,” the story everyone reported was the purported release of a tablet Mac
alongside said project. However, the AppleBlog is now shedding some more light on the primary project, a move to bundle supplementary materials like liner notes, lyrics, and video with album purchases.
They are now saying that this may come in the form of a proprietary media file format, that will presumably only work with iTunes (version 9 perhaps?) In any case, if this is true, Apple will surely incur the wrath of open source evangelists that have been pushing for formats like OGG forever, as well as Zune owners with iPod envy that may no longer be able to play such tracks on their older MP3 players. Hopefully this would be offered as an optional extra, rather than becoming the de facto standard for iTunes.
