Compare Mac Models With Apple's New Online Feature

There was plenty of speculation last night as to why Apple closed down its online store, and now we have some answers. It's not a white iPhone 4 or an "iTV," but a new "Compare Macs" feature, which allows customers to review a side-by-side comparison of the hardware specifications and prices of different systems all at once.
Now, you can pit up to three different models of Apple computers against each other and see which model is worth your money. So, if you're trying to outweigh the differences between a Mac desktop, laptop and mini, you can easily do so straight from the site. The comparison chart is broken down into five columns: hardware, software, technical specifications, environmental status report and a configuration summary.
If you decide you want to buy the computer, you can quickly add it to your cart and purchase it on the fly--or, you can hold on to that thought while you deliberate if that MacBook Pro is really worth your $1,200 (it totally is).

Wow, Apple did a really poor job with this feature. For example, if you compare a MacBook and a 17" MacBook Pro, it doesn't even tell you that the MacBook has no FireWire ports or that the MacBook Pro has an additional USB port on it.

But they did have a port comparison near the bottom, which shows you all the ports which the Mac has, so I suppose it would be nice if it told you it was missing something which another one of your selections has, but it’s not that hard to compare it with the images they give you.
