The British Academy of Film and Television Arts held its annual video game awards ceremony last night in London. The awards come every year as a way to showcase excellent game design across the industry. They highlight winners in a number of categories, and this was the first year that an iOS game took home the honor of Best Handheld Game.
The game in question was Chillingo's extremely popular puzzle game Cut the Rope [iTunes Link]. The game was put up against some extremely stiff competition in the genre, competing against heavy-hitters in the genre. The other nominees were all Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable games: Sonic Colours, Super Scribblenauts, LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, and Professor Layton and the Lost Future.
As if we needed any more confirmation that iOS gaming is becoming just as accepted as dedicated gaming devices like the DS and PSP. Winning the award is great, but next year we're hoping to see more nominees from the mobile gaming sector, especially as the iPad 2 begins to flex its muscle.
