The magicians from the Dev-Team, who have been jailbreaking and unlocking the iPhone practically from the beginning, have updated some of their tools for iOS 4 within hours of its release. However, there are some caveats.
The Dev-Team took to its blog and Twitter on Monday to announce that some of their tools had been updated for iOS 4. But it’s kind of a “good news, bad news” scenario at the moment.
First up is an update to ultrasn0w, the Dev-Team’s background tool to unlock your iDevice which is installed via Cydia or Rock. Previously, ultrasn0w could only unlock a device using the older 04.26.08 modem firmware (or baseband), which meant that a handset such as our own iPhone 3GS had to be delicately restored from special firmware created by the Dev-Team’s PwnageTool in order to run the latest 3.1.3 firmware, yet remain on the older, unlockable baseband.
The good news is that ultrasn0w 0.93 now works on basebands from 04.26.08 through 05.13.04, which happens to be the one included with the iOS 4 update also released on Monday. Short version: Anything prior to the iPhone 4 can be unlocked and used on any GSM carrier.
The bad news (at least for those of us with newer devices) is that there is currently no reliable tool to jailbreak anything other than an iPhone 3G or iPod touch second-generation. For those of you still rocking an iPhone 3G or second-gen iPod touch, the Dev-Team’s redsn0w 0.95b-3 is now available and, coupled with the ultrasn0w 0.93 update, means you can get a fully jailbroken, hacktivated and unlocked iPhone 3G running iOS 4.
Meanwhile, the Dev-Team is hard at work on updating their jailbreak tools for newer devices such as the iPhone 3GS and third-gen iPod touch, and you can bet they’ll be diving into the iPhone 4 this week as well, as soon as they can get their hands on the hardware itself. Until then, owners of those devices are urged to be patient and avoid the temptation of a lot of other hacks now floating about. Good things come to those who are patient, right?
When in doubt, always consult the official Dev-Team Blog or Twitter page before taking a leap that you may later regret. In the meantime, enjoy this musical journey from the Dev-Team called “All Aboard The Jailbreak Train”…
