Want to feel better about what you're
eating? Want to be able to check the safety of the unpronounceable
ingredients you see on the label while you're in the grocery store?
The iPhone app Don't
Eat That can help.
On his 50th birthday, Dwayne Ratleff
decided to get healthy. To do that, he decided he had a lot to learn
about nutrition. He spent nearly 1000 hours compiling a database
using information from the Food and Drug Administration, the European
Food Safety Agency, Food Standards Australia New Zealand, the World
Health Organization, and many more. He doesn't claim to be a doctor
or nutritionist, but he has used the best sources available to put
together a database with the best information available on additives
in our food.
What's especially interesting is the
times when these protective organizations disagree. The FDA has
allowed that additive to be used in food in the United States, but
how do you feel when you discover that it has been banned in
Australia? Don't Eat That allows search by ingredient name, and
includes separate listings of things harmful to kids, carcinogens,
items developed through genetic modification, and warnings of things
that can be allergens or problems for asthmatics.
It's available for $1.99 from the
app store, and the developer encourages you to help keep it up to
date by submitting your own additional information on ingredients to
be included in future updates.
