In yet another display of the massive cultural power of popular iPhone apps, Universal Studios announced today that they are joining forces with Lima Sky to create new, branded content for Doodle Jump [iTunes Link]. From the sound of things this may be an ongoing arrangement, but right now it's Universal's upcoming Easter kid's flick, Hop, that is getting integrated with Doodle Jump.
The film, to be released on April 1, is the story of a slacker who inadvertantly injures the Easter Bunny, inexplicably played by Russel Brand. Naturally, he then has to nurse him back to health. The free crossover update will include an Easter-themed level and the ability to play as the games furry leading character.
The crossover is more interesting than its free levels and Easter Bunny gameplay though. It's a sign that advertisers are enjoying the effects of this type of media crossover. It's also a signifier of the incredible reach that iPhone apps have achieved, especially with younger audiences. Could iPhone apps be the next gold mine for ad space? Apps that appeal to kids could be the biggest advertising opportunity since someone slapped Spider-man on a breakfast cereal.
